#LBOT Library Boxes of Trenton recent happenings; Bethany House of Hospitality, Capital City Farm, Trenton Coffeehouse & Roaster, Ida Malloy

#LBOT or Library Boxes of Trenton has been a rewarding project for me.  As with most of what I do it includes several partners, lots of moving parts and of course civic engagement.

The #LBOT located at the Bethany House of Hospitality continues to warm my heart.  Recently I dropped off ~50 books picked up from #ChampsTrenton and a few dozen magazines from Magazine Literacy.Org

This location moves a lot of reading materials.  The residents who are committed adopters of this #LBOT shared with me that it is used all the time.  They have even expanded to place give away items in good condition near the #LBOT and they are taken as well!

The location is a good one; along a NJ Transit Bus Route, with high volumes of foot traffic, next door to an active church and across the street from a vibrant park.

Have a look at the promotional video regarding the development of the Bethany House of Hospitality - BHOH

Did you know Trenton NJ has a Farm!  Have a look and listen to my coverage of the Capital City Farm led by Allegra Lovejoy.

http://trenton365.blogspot.com/2016/09/capital-city-farm-trenton-nj-september.html

While out and about doing what I do I stopped by this location near the Trenton Police HQ and the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen to document this #LBOT.  A few paperbacks were present so I loaded it up with Guideposts Magazines from Magazine Literacy and some romance novels from Champs.

Biking was my freedom as a "youngster" and I want to help others have that experience.  The biking culture in Trenton NJ is organic, artistic, functional and growing!  From the monthly Trenton Social Ride led by Wills Kinsley, small groups led by cyclist Kevin Duddy, Bike Polo, Tall Bike Modifications and the advocacy group Trenton Cycling Revolution - TCR regularly you can see a diverse collection of people riding bikes in Trenton.

In preparation for the annual Bike Tour of Trenton a small group came together to start the process for the route creation.  This took us to Trenton Coffeehouse and Roaster owned and operated by Abdul Qadir.  During this visit I checked in on the #LBOT adopted by Abdul and created by Arizona Perron.  This #LBOT had a few offerings and appears to be doing just fine.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In addition to the BHOH, the Capital City Farm and Trenton Coffeehouse and Roaster locations I have received a few calls from others who want to Adopt a #LBOT one of them is Ida Malloy.

Ida who is very civically active contacted me about her "Backyard Book Club" which meets weekly and offers reading materials to the neighborhood children.  Ida received over 200 copies of Highlights Magazine to share and I expect she will need more!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Each Monday night at Champs Trenton, 931 Chambers St., #LBOT Artist Lori Johansson hosts "Art Chill Night" and on July 24th the theme will be literacy!  Join us as we create art inspired by literacy, sort and package books and magazines that will be delivered throughout the area.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In closing think about how you can be a part of this effort with your time, talent and treasures!

If you Adopted a #LBOT, we need to hear from you about your experiences so we can support your efforts!

Photographer Habiyb Shu'Aib

I met Habiyb Shu'Aib a few years ago.  Like so many people in the "Art Scene" in Trenton NJ we all know of each other.

Utilizing social media I shared an opportunity for a local Photographer to join me in the WIMG1300 Studios to capture some images of the live radio and taped TV interviews of the Trenton 365 Show.

Habiyb reached out and joined me on multiple occasions visually capturing exclusive interviews with Model/Actress/Entrepreneur Nacone Martin the Center For Interim Programs and others.

Our friendship has grown and the magic has happened; we know mutual people, we have mutual interests, we admire each others efforts, we seek each others assistance, we introduce each other to other people....we build community through civic engagement.

A few of those connections include local "watering hole" Champs, other Photographers Kevin Duddy, Chris Marinari and the Trenton Photography Club.

Recently we connected around a project he is working on for AAN-Art All Night the 24 hour art exhibit in Trenton NJ put on by Trenton NJ's Visual Arts Organization Artworks.

I suggest you reach out to Habiyb, ask him about his efforts, and check out his website www.bloved1.com

In addition you can see his first solo show happening at Mercer County Community College - JKC Gallery on the Trenton Campus beginning June 19, 2017.

Have a listen to a recent chat and see some images I captured during that visit.

Library Boxes of Trenton NJ

On Friday May 6, 2016 in Trenton NJ the “Books On The Block 1.0” event took place at Championship Bar located at 931 Chambers St.

Several individuals and organizations committed to literacy efforts in Trenton, NJ participated.

Local Artists upcycled newspaper boxes into Library Boxes and painted Book Nooks that will be distributed through a network of locations throughout Trenton, including Barbershops, Businesses, Organizations and individual residents.

Partnering Organizations

Trenton 365 founder and project coordinator Jacque Howard, explained that this project is an “adoption model” meaning that individuals, businesses or organizations will initially receive the repurposed newspaper boxes for free along with a load of used books.  The adopters will commit to manage the boxes and surrounding area. (Excerpt from Mercerme.com)

United Way of Greater Mercer County – Barbershop Initiative
http://www.uwgmc.org/

United Way of Greater Mercer County is a nonprofit organization that, among other goals, works to enhance and promote early childhood literacy.  We are proud to partner with our friends in Trenton and the Books on the Block program. Through these efforts, we know that we can help blanket the city of Trenton with books and increase access to literacy. Megan Kirschner

The Trenton Free Public Library wholly supports Books on the Block, which reflects our mission of being a bridge that connects the community to literacy, guides learning, and inspires curiosity. Rochelle Stern

Trenton Makes—Words! is a community initiative to foster the vocabulary development of Trenton children age 5 and under through parent-child engagement experiences with art, music, history, and science.  The partnership between The New Jersey State Museum, Trenton Community Music School, and The Children's Home Society is supported by PNC Grow Up Great and offers city-wide engaging educational programs and festivals for parents/caregivers and their young children.

Trenton Makes - Words! will be holding a Pop-Up at the Books on the Block event on May 6th, where there will be activities for parents and children including music, arts and crafts, and storytelling to promote fun and learning. Caitlin Fair

Code for Trenton
http://codefortrenton.org/

All of the change-makers part of Code for Trenton are excited to enjoy the honor of joining with others to make the library boxes and book nooks happen all over Trenton. We're excited about using mapping technology and social media to facilitate and support. This is profound stuff - putting the written word in the hands of every child and adult fosters a culture of knowledge, of literacy, and of a future that we build ourselves from the bottom-up rather than being told how to. Personally this matters so much to me; as a born and raised proud Trentonian, and as a person who feels that reading, writing, and knowledge is what will get the entire city moving forward, regardless of the craziness that is in our way. Adam Porroni

My Brothers Keeper

President Obama’s national My Brother’s Keeper initiative is a challenge to communities to come together in addressing opportunity and achievement gaps that young men of color face. With the White House’s guidance, the Capital City My Brother’s Keeper initiative is an effort to support existing and new community led initiatives that address issues of chronic absenteeism, early literacy, and employability.

The City of Trenton, through the Capital City My Brother’s Keeper initiative, is pleased to support a community led and driven initiative that will increase access to literacy resources for our children and the City at large. Early literacy is a critical component of Trenton’s continued revitalization. Alex Rivera
